Why Some People Thrive Under Pressure And Others Shut Down

Most of my life’s work has been based on diving deeply into the experience of uncertainty.

Not just studying it intellectually, but observing it through human behaviour, through coaching conversations, through leadership, through emotional patterns, and through the thousands of stories people have shared with me over the years about challenge, change, fear, growth, grief, ambition, meaning and identity.

And through those patterns, one of the greatest realisations I have come to understand is this:

Not everybody experiences uncertainty in the same way.

For some people, uncertainty feels energising. It creates movement, possibility and momentum. They naturally move toward challenge and intensity. For others, uncertainty creates hesitation, emotional tension, overthinking or withdrawal. Some people seek connection when uncertainty appears. Others seek control. Others seek clarity, information or structure. And others retreat inward so they can emotionally process what they are experiencing before they can move forward again.

Yet so often in life, relationships and leadership, we unconsciously expect people to respond to uncertainty the way we do.

And this is where so much misunderstanding begins!

In Episode 116 of Insights, I wanted to explore the five levels of uncertainty through the lens of behavioural energy types because the deeper I have gone into emotional fitness and behavioural profiling over the years, the more I have realised that behaviour is often an adaptation to uncertainty itself.

The way people react under pressure, the way they communicate, the way they cope, the way they avoid, the way they pursue, the way they connect or disconnect, is very often linked to the relationship they have with uncertainty.

And once we begin to understand that, something shifts.

We stop labelling people as difficult and we begin recognising the patterns that drive the behaviour that people display… we recognise that people are patterned.

That awareness changes the way we lead, coach, communicate and relate to each other.

Uncertainty doesn’t just reveal our natural behaviour and energetic predisposition, it amplifies it.

The D Energy And The Relationship With Challenge

The D energy is often driven by progress, achievement, movement and outcome. This energy naturally moves toward challenge because challenge creates focus and intensity. Pressure sharpens them. Difficulty activates them. They often feel most alive when they are overcoming something.

At the lighter levels of uncertainty, such as variety, D energies do not usually place a huge amount of emotional value on random change unless it contributes toward an outcome. If variety feels distracting or inefficient, they may quickly lose interest because their focus tends to stay attached to progress and results.

Adventure for the D energy often becomes competitive very quickly. Sometimes that competition is with others. Sometimes it is with themselves. They often measure experiences against previous performances, previous outcomes or previous achievements. The adventure itself becomes something to conquer, improve or master.

Challenge is where this energy often thrives most naturally. When uncertainty becomes difficult, D energies generally move toward it rather than away from it. They often perform exceptionally well with their backs against the wall because action helps them regain a sense of certainty and control. Movement reduces emotional hesitation.

When problems arise, D energies tend to confront them head on. They usually do not want to spend large amounts of time emotionally circling around the issue. Their instinct is often to solve, move and progress. During crisis, this can become even more amplified. They may become highly stoic, focused and determined, particularly when something meaningful to them feels threatened.

The growth edge for D energies is not usually movement.

It is emotional awareness, patience and understanding that not everybody processes uncertainty at the same speed or intensity they do.

The I Energy And The Need For Connection

The I energy relates to uncertainty very differently.

This energy is deeply connected to emotion, connection, expression, stimulation and people. Variety often energises them because uncertainty at this level feels exciting, engaging and emotionally alive. New ideas, new opportunities, new conversations and new experiences create movement internally for the I energy.

Adventure is often experienced through people more than the actual activity itself. Who they share the experience with matters deeply. Emotional connection, laughter, storytelling and shared moments often become the most meaningful part of the experience.

When challenge appears, I energies are often quick to embrace it initially because they naturally lean toward possibility and future thinking. They can become highly energised by new goals or exciting opportunities. But the deeper challenge for many I energies is sustaining focus once the emotional excitement begins to fade and the uncertainty becomes heavier or more prolonged.

When problems arise, I energies can initially become emotionally scattered. Their mind may jump rapidly between possibilities, emotions, fears and conversations. Talking things through with others often helps them emotionally regulate because connection reduces the emotional intensity of uncertainty for them.

During crisis, I energies may sometimes appear more emotionally okay externally than they actually feel internally. Humour, positivity or emotional expression can become protective mechanisms. Yet underneath the surface, they may be carrying significant emotional weight that others do not immediately see.

The growth edge for the I energy is learning how to remain emotionally grounded when uncertainty loses its excitement and becomes genuinely difficult.

The S Energy And Emotional Safety

The S energy is deeply connected to stability, consistency, trust, care and emotional safety.

Out of all the behavioural energies, the S energy generally has the slowest relationship with uncertainty. This is not weakness. It simply means that emotional safety and familiarity matter deeply to them.

Variety is usually approached cautiously at first. The S energy may eventually embrace something new, but often in ways that still feel emotionally manageable and safe. Even adventure tends to be approached through gradual expansion rather than sudden disruption.

This is where the distinction between expanding your comfort zone and completely leaving it becomes incredibly important.

S energies generally prefer expanding their comfort zone over abandoning it completely. They like building upon familiar reference points rather than stepping into environments where there is absolutely no emotional grounding.

When challenge appears, S energies often need time to emotionally process before fully stepping into it. Reflection tends to come before movement. But once they commit emotionally, they are often incredibly loyal, resilient and persistent. They may move slowly initially, but they often stay committed long after others have emotionally checked out.

When problems arise, S energies naturally spend time reflecting on the history behind the issue. They often look backwards first, trying to understand what led to the situation before focusing on the path forward.

During crisis, S energies may retreat inward significantly. Their nervous system often seeks emotional protection, safety and recovery before they can fully re-engage externally. They may temporarily withdraw while emotionally processing the depth of what they are experiencing.

The gift of the S energy is emotional steadiness, care, loyalty and depth.

The challenge is learning how to move through uncertainty without becoming trapped in emotional hesitation or prolonged reflection.

The C Energy And The Search For Certainty

The C energy is deeply connected to accuracy, precision, logic, structure and understanding.

This energy often experiences uncertainty through the lens of information and analysis. Variety becomes interesting when it introduces new ways of solving problems, improving systems or expanding understanding.

Adventure for the C energy is often connected to learning, mastery and intellectual growth more than emotional stimulation. Expanding knowledge, capability and understanding becomes their version of excitement and exploration.

When challenge appears, C energies often move into analytical mode very quickly. They evaluate options, risks, systems and consequences. If uncertainty can improve effectiveness, performance or understanding, they are often willing to embrace it. But they generally prefer clarity before movement.

When problems arise, C energies naturally assess controllables versus uncontrollables. They weigh up pros and cons. They gather information. They seek structure and understanding before acting. Once clarity emerges internally, they often move toward solutions quite effectively.

During crisis, C energies can sometimes appear emotionally detached externally because much of their emotional processing happens privately. While they may present as composed, practical or highly controlled, there is often a significant emotional process happening internally that others do not see.

The strength of the C energy is thoughtful decision making, structure and precision.

The challenge is not becoming trapped in overanalysis, emotional suppression or waiting for complete certainty before moving forward.

Emotional Fitness Is About Awareness

One of the reasons I loved creating this episode is because it reminds us that people are not difficult.

People are patterned.

And when we understand behavioural patterns through the lens of uncertainty, we begin developing more compassion for ourselves and for others.

Because underneath almost every reaction is a human being trying to create some form of certainty in an uncertain world.

Some people create certainty through action.
Some create certainty through connection.
Some create certainty through reflection.
Some create certainty through information and structure.

None of these responses are right or wrong… they are simply different ways to relate to uncertainty.

And emotional fitness is not about removing uncertainty from life… it’s about transforming the way we relate and navigate to it.

Becoming more emotionally fit is about becoming more conscious and aware of our patterns, our reactions and the emotional needs that drive our behaviour.

Uncertainty does not just reveal who we are, it also reveals who we are becoming.
